In 1539 he learned of Cibola and the Seven Cities of Gold and organised a conquistador expedition into pueblo country. By 1541 he reached the Arkansas River, having discovered the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon. But his expedition was a failure and he lost a fortune. Coronado died in 1854 and was buried under a church altar in Mexico City HERNANDO DE SOTO 1497- 1542 Hernando de Soto was a Spanish conquistador and explorer of the southeast of North America. He was a senior member of Francisco Pizzaro’s conquest of the Incas of Peru. De Soto conquered and explored many states in the southeast of North America. He was the first European to sight the Mississippi River. There are many places named in memory of his exploits, but De Soto found no gold. HERNAN CORTES 1485 – 1547 We look at the conquest of the Aztec Empire in 159-1520 by the Spanish. Hernán Cortés and his gold-seeking conquistadors who defeated and utterly destroyed the bronze age Aztec Empire of Montezuma II. The city in the lake of 3000 000 people was levelled and Mexico City built on top of it. The citizens today are mostly mestizos, the result of inter-breeding between the Spanish and Indian inhabitants of Mexico. The conquest and destruction of the Aztec civilisation remains today a sad reminder of the brutality of Cortés in achieving his objectives FRANCISCO PIZARRO 1475 – 1541 Francisco Pizzaro and his Spanish conquistadores mounted three expeditions into the Inca Empire of Peru: 1524-25, 1526-28 and 1530-34. The Incas were the ruling royal family and were engaged in a civil war when the Spanish arrived. Smallpox then devastated the civilisation. Pizarro’s lust for gold drove him to conquer Peru and build a port at Lima to export gold and import supplies and reinforcements. In 1535, Manco Inca attacked the Spanish in Peru. Spanish technology, fighting methods and ruthlessness saw the Incas driven over the Andes and their civilisation obliterated. Peru became a Spanish enclave and became another sad reminder of the brutality of mankind

FAMILY HISTORY Leader: Marianne Faull Description: Family histories tell the stories of families and the times they lived in: their trials and triumphs, highs and lows, hardships and successes and their saints and sinners. Skeletons are dragged out of the cupboard and names are brought to life. This often helps us understand why our grandparents and parents were the way they were and helps us begin to understand ourselves. Learn how to grasp the basics, organise research, use the resources now available to family historians, coax information out of reluctant family members and direct research where it needs to go.
