HISTORY NOWRA Leader: Lloyd Pitcher Description: CITY OF LONDON HISTORY The city of London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom. From a Neolithic [Stone Age] settlement on the lower Thames River 350,000 years ago, it has seen much history. The Romans invaded in 43 AD and began the recording of people and events. As a result, there is an excellent written and archaeological record of the development and growth of the city of London. The standout period probably includes the remarkable technological developments of nineteenth century England, when Queen Victoria reigned for 60 years. Today, the population of metropolitan London is 9.6 million. In 2035 the population is projected to be 10.5 million. London is one of the great cities of the world. Do you agree? FRANCE, SPAIN AND SYDNEY TOWN The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries saw intense rivalry between the British, French and Spanish empires. In January 1788 Governor Arthur Phillip was surprised by the arrival of French explorer La Pérouse with two ships and staying for six weeks. In 1796, two Spanish ships arrived in Sydney Town. A Spanish captain from this expedition, prepared and, in 1802, submitted a plan to the Spanish government to capture Sydney Town. Later in 1802, the French explorer Nicholas Baudin arrived in Sydney Town also with two ships. An member of this expedition also drew up a plan for the French government to capture Sydney and set up its own penal colony in Western Australia.. This presentation outlines the extraordinary story of the French and Spanish motives for wishing to seize Sydney Town from the British. HUMAN STRUCTURES IN HISTORY It has been an intriguing road of human development. For millennia, the world population comprised hunters and gatherers, literally nomadic and living off the land. Then, after the end of the last Ice Age some 10,000 years ago, cities were developed, agriculture was developed, as were technology and sophisticated ideas for buildings in which to live. Machinery was developed to construct these buildings. Where did these ideas come from? Today’s we look at human structures in the ancient world, the modern world, New South Wales and the Shoalhaven. Structures have defined human achievement from time immemorial. The natural landscape is manipulated to create functional and utilitarian structures which, hopefully, benefit people and allow them to both live more comfortably and achieve more in their limited time on Earth, STRUCTURES CONCEIVED AND CONSTRUCTED BY MANKIND The creative construction pursuits of humanity are indeed most impressive, if not even extraordinary. We look at a selection of structures from early times to the present. Included are the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, Herodium, the Valley of the Kings, Cathedrals, Dover Castle and the Millau Viaduct. Many of these structures exist today and are icons of human construction. Persisting questions include: where did these ideas for the buildings, the machinery to build them and the materials needed come from? The remarkable history of human growth and development is reflected in the buildings which have eventuated.
