Being held at the SHOALHAVEN HEADS COMMUNITY CENTRE, 111 Shoalhaven Heads Rd
HISTORY NOWRA Leader: Lloyd Pitcher Description: BURKE AND WILLS EXPEDITION TO CROSS AUSTRALIA Burke and Wills were probably the most famous of the Australian explorers. From the genesis of an idea in 1857, the Royal Society of Victoria sponsored the Great Northern Exploration Expedition to cross Australia from south to north. Robert O’Hara Burke had served 7 years in the Austrian army, spoke fluent German and was a police inspector on the Victorian goldfields. William John Wills was a shepherd, a gold office assayer, trainee surveyor and wanted to be an explorer. Wills wrote a journal which was the only record of this ill-fated journey. Burke and Wills led the expedition which left Melbourne in August 1861 and ended in tragedy at Cooper’s Creek later in 1861. Were they the right men to lead the expedition? Why was the expedition both unsuccessful and tragic? DOT BUTLER 1911-2008 Dot Butler [née English] was born in Ashfield, Sydney. She enjoyed a vey carefree and physical outdoor childhood. In 1931 she joined the Sydney Bush Walkers Club and walked, climbed and canoed in the NSW Blue Mountains, the Warrumbungles, New Zealand, the Andes [Peru], Yukon River [Alaska], Sierra National Forest and Europe. Dot was the Australian Geographer Adventurer of the Year in 1988. She married in 1943 and had four children, three of whom died. In 2008 Hobart, Tasmania, she passed away near her daughter Rona and her family, at the age of 97. Dot was a truly remarkable Australian. LASSETER’S LOST GOLD 1930 Several stories exist of an Australian El Dorado, an immense reef of gold in Central Australia. Perhaps the greatest of these is the story of Lewis Harold Lasseter to have found such a gold reef in 1897 on the western edge of the MacDonnell Ranges. In 1930, a well-funded expedition was mounted to find the reef. Lasseter was the guide. The expedition was abandoned when the leader dismissed Lasseter as a charlatan. Lasseter then accompanied a “dogger” to look for the reef. They ended up fighting and parted ways. Lasseter took two camels to carry his food and water. They bolted in the desert. Lasseter was unwell and was cared for by Aboriginals for 16 weeks. Lasseter died in the desert on 30 January 1931. Since then, there have been many unsuccessful attempts to locate Lasseter’s lost gold reef. If the reef was found, fabulous wealth would result. Does Lasseter’s lost reef exist? WARWICK DEACOCK 1926-2017 Warwick Deacock was Born in London UK. He was a member of the British Army from 1941 until 1958 and rose to the rank of Major. After his marriage to Antonia Francisca van den Bos in 1958, he emigrated to Australia. He helped found the Duke of Edinburgh Award in Australia, participated in the 1962-1963 Heard Island Expedition, and climbed Big Ben, started holiday camps for children at his property Chakola [in Kangaroo Valley] and started Ausventure, all in 1965. He participated in many expeditions to the Himalaya Mountains before he commenced camel trekking in Australia. In 1989, Warwick and Antonia moved to Maleny in Queensland. 2012 saw the passing of Antonia. Soldier, sailor, mountaineer, conservationist and visionary, Warwick Deacock died in 2017. He famously had said: Give it a go or you will never know. Warwick was an outstanding Australian.
